Transfer News: Ajax retain interest in signing Tottenham Hotspur star Steven Bergwijn
According to Charlie Eccleshare of The Athletic (Subscription Required), Ajax Amsterdam continue to show an interest to secure the signature of Tottenham Hotspur star Steven Bergwijn ahead of the summer transfer window. He has struggled to break into the starting lineup since the start of February, and his future is currently in uncertain waters as a result.
Bergwijn was subjected to interest from the Eredivisie club back in January. However, Tottenham were not willing to part ways with the winger at that point. He was ready to move to Amsterdam but was happy at the same time to stay and fight for a place on the team after learning the English club’s stance.
The Dutch club have maintained their interest in the 24-year-old, and they could approach Spurs once again in the future. They will not be alone, though, as it is touted that several other clubs would also be interested in the attacker if he is made available by the North London side.
Bergwijn to leave Spurs?
It will be a damning blow if the Dutchman leaves us in the future as he genuinely possesses the qualities required to become successful at N17. That is acknowledged by the club as well, with his “technical proficiency and security in possession” being admired by those in charge.
Moreover, Antonio Conte’s side also realises how the Premier League attacker could perform well in several positions up front. As such, it would be a major blow for us if he parts ways with us amidst interest from Erik ten Hag’s side. Losing someone like him who offers quality and depth across multiple areas would undoubtedly be a difficult pill to swallow, even if we get a solid sum in return.
That being said, there is still a chance that the Spurs ace could stay with us past this season. That would depend upon Conte’s requirement for the squad size as well as the team’s involvement in Europe, depending on the type of competition they will be in for the next campaign.
The former PSV Eindhoven man can lend us a hand with his quality in the remainder of this season. His performances in March’s friendlies for the Netherlands are a great example of how he can help us in our pursuit to achieve Champions League qualification for the next term.

Overthrowing the current front three, comprising Son Heung-Min, Harry Kane and Dejan Kulusevski, would be a tough task for Bergwijn. However, Conte can certainly give the latter more minutes than he is earning currently. Let’s hope that the manager realises the risk involved and manages the minutes better in the rest of this campaign.
We are expected to challenge for titles next season onwards, so losing Bergwijn would be a major blow, especially when we need to rotate the squad throughout the term. We remain hopeful that he will stay at the club past this summer transfer window.
