Spurs Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur identify Genoa star Andrea Cambiaso as Sergio Reguilon replacement
According to Alfredo Pedulla (h/t Mirror), Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing up a move for Genoa defender Andrea Cambiaso in order to replace Sergio Reguilon, who could be Real Madrid-bound in the summer.
The Spanish giants have a buy-back clause in Reguilon’s contract with Spurs, and could exercise that option at the end of the season in order to take up Marcelo’s space in the team, with the veteran set to depart Real upon the expiry of his contract this term.
There seems to be a left-back carousel happening in the summer transfer window, with Los Blancos and the Lilywhites involved in the transfer market in the hunt for defenders in order to make up for their potential outgoings.
It makes sense for Spurs as well, as any outgoing for the Spaniard will leave us short of options down that flank. Ben Davies has not been trusted in Reguilon’s role under Antonio Conte, with the Italian usually playing him as a third centre-back in his system.
Although Real have not made any concrete offers to re-sign Reguilon, Tottenham are already looking at transfer targets as his replacement, with Cambiaso making it to the top of their shortlist of candidates after impressing in Serie A this season.
One for the future
Known to be an attack-minded left-back, much like Reguilon, the Italian star is playing only his first full season with Genoa’s first team in the top-flight, having been sent out on loan multiple times after coming through the ranks at the youth level for Il Grifone.
Spurs football director Fabio Paratici is said to know the 22-year-old well from his time in Italy, and could make a move for him in the summer to beef up manager Antonio Conte’s squad, with the player available for around £12m. For a player that is known to be versatile and able to use both feet, Paratici could potentially pull off a transfer coup for Cambiaso.
Real may not have made an official move for Reguilon yet, but that has not stopped Tottenham from scouting for his replacement in the summer. If the La Liga club does come back for the Spaniard, then we will pocket a £34m sum for a player we have hardly had for two seasons – which is not really a bad return.
Madrid would also want to solidify their left flank with the timeless Marcelo set for an exit this summer. Reguilon, who is 25 and hails from Madrid, would certainly be a player many of their fans would want back at Santiago Bernabeu. After all, he has properly shown his abilities in the Premier League- one of the most intense and competitive top leagues around.
That being said, Tottenham’s potential replacement for Reguilon is a defender who is currently helping his side fight hard to stay in Serie A. Cambiaso will only complete his first full season in the top-flight in the summer, and for Spurs to snap him up in order to compete for trophies next campaign may not be the best transfer business to consider.

Although talented, perhaps Cambiaso is someone we look to as one for the future, and we would be wise to sign the player to further develop him. But to deem him as the new first-choice under Conte is putting too much pressure on a player that has never played in the Premier League, let alone left Italy. Other experienced left-backs would make for better targets instead in the summer transfer window, in the event Reguilon returns home to Real.
