Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur rekindle interest to sign West Ham United target Sam Johnstone
According to Daily Mail Online, Tottenham Hotspur have rekindled their interest to sign West Ham United target Sam Johnstone in the summer transfer window. He looks set to leave West Bromwich Albion at the end of the current campaign.
Johnstone will see his current contract with West Brom expire after this season. That has made him an attractive prospect, with several clubs already vying for his services. Tottenham had tried to secure his signature in January but decided to focus their attention to bolster the other areas in the squad.
Now, Spurs have reignited their interest in the Englishman as they are looking to add more competition to Hugo Lloris. However, they will need to face off against West Ham, but they are not the only interested party at this moment. Newcastle United, Southampton and Rangers are also in the fray ahead of this summer.
Johnstone- Good choice for Spurs?
Lloris is nearing the end of his playing career, so we need to find a replacement for him sooner rather than later. While Pierluigi Gollini is in the squad right now, he has not shown any indications of being a solid option to provide healthy competition to the skipper. As such, it is touted that Gollini is likely to leave N17 and return to Atalanta once his loan spell ends after this term.
Hence, we need to look for other targets, and Johnstone can be a smart choice for us. He impressed with the Baggies when they achieved promotion to the Premier League and has done the same in this campaign as well. Not to mention, he is also a contender for a spot in the England national team under Gareth Southgate.
The 29-year-old Championship shot-stopper is looking to make the best case for himself with the 2022 Qatar World Cup drawing close. A move to the PL would definitely bring him into a wider, brighter spotlight and if he can prove his mettle against the best teams in the land, there would hardly be any reason for the Three Lions to overlook him.
Lloris has struggled in certain phases recently, and we have to see how his performances pan out in the coming months ahead of this summer. Johnstone could even challenge the ex-Lyon star for starts if he joins us in the summer, while presenting himself as a potential long-term replacement for Lloris.
It wouldn’t be easy, though, as other interested parties would understand the situation as well, knowing they can bring in a homegrown player on a potentially ‘bargain‘ deal. Moreover, not many of them would boast of having a World Cup-winning superstar between their sticks currently.

One thing is for certain, it wouldn’t make sense for the player to come in at N17 and warm the bench. We are certainly a club big enough to attract some of the biggest names in football and if we offer Johnstone the prospect of regular minutes, it would then remain to be seen if he would turn down such an enticing prospect.
