Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur linked with a move for Borussia Dortmund star Thomas Meunier
According to The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move to secure the services of Borussia Dortmund star Thomas Meunier in the summer transfer window. He is in line to leave Signal Iduna Park after this season and could potentially make his way to the Premier League.
Meunier has less than six months left in his current contract with Dortmund, which has resulted in him getting linked with a move elsewhere. He is legally able to reach a pre-contract agreement with clubs outside Germany due to this situation. Hence, Tottenham could make a case for themselves at this moment with the fullback.
Spurs are not alone in the race as Bayern Munich would give a stern challenge for them to overcome. The German is currently happy with his life with Marco Rose’s side, but it is currently unknown whether an extension is in the cards or not. In any case, the English club can know the latest developments as they can engage in pre-contract talks.
Should Spurs target Meunier?
The North London club could use a right-wingback in their ranks, looking at how Emerson Royal has struggled to replicate his form from Real Betis. Matt Doherty has been in the same boat, but he has turned his fortunes around and has been impressive in the past few weeks- showcasing why we got him in from Wolves.
Despite that, it is important that Conte has players that truly belong in his idea of what he envisages at Spurs. Just having depth isn’t enough- it is the quality that counts at the end of the day. It remains to be seen if Meunier is someone Conte really wants and if the Belgian can adjust to his idea at N17.
But having shown his quality at Parc des Princes, Signal Iduna Park, and for the Belgian national team, Meunier could be a useful player to have down the right side. Not to mention, the ex-Club Brugge star has experience playing as a wing-back in a five-man backline.
Meunier has two goals and four assists to his name from 17 Bundesliga appearances this season, which is a solid output indeed. Bayern Munich would be a major issue even if they cannot engage in talks with the Belgian international like us.
That is because of his recent revelation, where the 30-year-old conveyed to Dutch source Het Laatste Nieuws (h/t The Sun), how offers from top clubs like Barcelona, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Bayern simply cannot be passed upon. Not to mention, the Bavarians have a history of signing top players from their Bundesliga rivals.

But then again, there is something brewing at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium under Antonio Conte. The ex-Inter Milan manager has the pedigree to deliver trophies and if he can convince top players to come in and join his project, it would make the ex-Inter Milan manager’s job a bit easier.
