Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur in pole position to sign West Brom star Sam Johnstone
According to Alasdair Gold, the club’s correspondent for Football.London, Tottenham Hotspur are currently in the pole position to sign West Brom star Sam Johnstone in the summer transfer window. He is in line to leave his current club at the end of the current campaign as a result of this update.
Johnstone has entered the final year of his contract, so he will become a free agent this summer. Fabio Paratici, Tottenham’s managing director of football, likes to have a look at every free transfer opportunity that arrives their way. Perhaps, that could be the reason why his side is currently the frontrunner in this transfer race.
The 29-year-old is currently shortlisted by Spurs as part of their potential summer targets in the goalkeeping position. They are looking to bring in a backup option for Hugo Lloris after this term, and Johnstone’s homegrown status makes him an attractive prospect for the North Londoners.
Potential summer signing?
We could potentially be required to sign a shot-stopper this summer, with Pierluigi Gollini failing to prove his worth to us. There is no reason why the club should trigger his £12.9million buy option given his inability to impress. It seems that the club does not plan to activate the clause, instead focussing their attention on bringing in Johnstone.
Lloris did sign a contract extension at the start of this year, which will see him tied down until 2024. However, he would need to be challenged to ensure that there is healthy competition in our squad. The skipper has been questionable in certain phases, but it remains to be seen if there are signs of decline.
As such, Johnstone would be a great prospect for us as he possesses the qualities that are needed to rival Lloris. Maybe, the West Bromwich Albion keeper could even pip the Frenchman, which is a belief shared within the club as well.

In any case, we must take advantage of this opportunity and put an end to our pursuit as early as possible. After all, that would ensure that we would have ample time to focus on other areas while bolstering the shot-stopping position as well.
Only time will give us an answer whether the club will finalise a move for Johnstone this summer or not. We hope that is the case, considering how he can provide enough quality to protect the goalposts for a few more years. Not to mention, his transfer would not affect our transfer budget as well, making the prospect of signing him even better.
