Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur rival Manchester United for RB Leipzig midfielder Konrad Laimer
According to the German news outlet BILD (h/t Daily Mail Online), Tottenham Hotspur are engaged in battle with Manchester United for the signature of RB Leipzig midfielder Konrad Laimer ahead of the summer transfer window. He recently dropped one of his best performances of the campaign in his side’s 4-1 win against Borussia Dortmund.
Laimer will see his current contract with Leipzig expire after the 2022-23 season. That makes him an attractive prospect, considering how he could possibly be available for a fair price this summer. Man United and Tottenham have expressed an interest to get their hands on the midfielder.
The 24-year-old caught Spurs’ scouts’ eye when the Bundesliga side knocked them out of the 2020 Champions League edition in the round of 16. He is also admired by Ralf Rangnick, who could suggest the Red Devils sign the midfielder as part of their squad overhaul in the centre of the pitch.
Should Spurs target Laimer?
The German club have turned their season around after having a disappointing first half this term. The Austrian has played a key role in their rise in the latter stages of this campaign, having chipped in with five goals and four assists from central midfield.
The Bundesliga ace can play as a pivot or even a right-sided midfielder if necessary. That is certainly a great asset as it would offer Antonio Conte more options to choose from should the North London club sign Laimer.
The Mancunians would pose a genuine threat, though, as they are expected to lose Paul Pogba for free this summer. Not to mention, they are desperate for midfield additions, with Nemanja Matic nearing the end of his playing career. Fred and Scott McTominay, meanwhile, are limited technically, which calls for the need for a midfield signing.
That is not the only problem that we may end up facing with Laimer being set to engage in talks with his club over a new contract. It would happen only after the season, though, which could give us time to make a case for ourselves and push for a move this summer.

We also need reinforcements in midfield if there are ambitions to challenge for trophies. Four midfielders are not enough considering how long a season is and the competitions we will be engaged in from the next term onwards.
As such, Laimer would be a great option to boost our ranks, especially when he is widely regarded as one of the best well-rounded midfielders in Germany. Signing him would be a great piece of business, but whether that will happen or not remains to be seen.
