Tottenham increasingly confident of pipping PL rival to land Championship ace

Tottenham Hotspur are increasingly optimistic about beating Southampton to sign Sam Johnstone

According to The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur are becoming increasingly optimistic about beating Southampton to sign Sam Johnstone this summer transfer window. His future at West Bromwich Albion is currently in uncertain waters, which means that he could potentially leave at the end of this season.

Johnstone is in line to become a free agent after the current campaign. Premier League sides like Tottenham and the Saints have added him to their radars as they look to add him to their respective squads. Both clubs require additions in the goalkeeping position, which prompted their interest in him.

However, Spurs are growing in confidence about securing the Englishman’s services, having been a long term admirer of the shot-stopper. Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side, meanwhile, have maintained their interest as all of their goalkeepers, Alex McCarthy, Fraser Forster and Willy Caballero, will be out of contracts this summer.

Spurs must sign Johnstone!

Hugo Lloris being 35 years of age in and of itself raises the need to search for potential targets to replace our skipper. After all, we would need to prepare for life after him eventually and signing someone up ahead would do us good to ensure seamless replacement moving forward.

Johnstone can be that man as he has impressed with West Brom even if he has had a subdued campaign this term. Despite that, the 29-year-old is still a great prospect as he did impress when his current club had a short spell in the Premier League in the 2020-21 season.

Not to mention, the Championship ace would also be available for free, which means that we can save some money and use it towards bolstering the other areas in the squad. Pierluigi Gollini has been our second choice goalkeeper this season, but he is expected to return to Atalanta after completing his loan spell with us.

As such, we would need to bring in a shot-stopper anyway after the current campaign. Johnstone would be a solid choice as he can deputise for the Spurs skipper, and the former could even compete with the PL veteran for the starting spot.

With the 2022 Qatar World Cup drawing close with each passing day, Johnstone will need the exposure to get into Gareth Southgate’s squad. A move to N17 would certainly help in that regard, and perhaps that could explain the reason why the North Londoners are optimistic about signing him.

Now we have to wait and see how this pursuit will turn out to be in the coming months ahead of the next season. We remain hopeful, just like the club, that Johnstone would join forces with Antonio Conte this summer.
