Tottenham Hotspur favourites to land Bologna midfielder Mattias Svanberg in the summer transfer window
According to media outlet iNews (h/t football.london), Tottenham Hotspur are favourites to land Bologna midfielder Mattias Svanberg in the summer, despite the player attracting interest from other clubs in the Premier League.
Spurs saw the departure of Dele Alli in January, while also sanctioning the temporary exits of Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso, and Bryan Gil on loan deals. Although the trio are expected back at their parent club at the end of the season, their futures in north London are unclear.
Given this lack of depth in midfield, Tottenham have eyed a move for Svanberg ahead of the new campaign, with the club favourites to land the signature of a player who is currently playing his trade in Italy, having come through the ranks at Malmo’s academy.
However, it is also claimed by Record (h/t football.london) that the Lilywhites will face competition from other English sides in Everton and West Ham to secure the services of the Sweden international. Bologna are expected to sell him so they can cash in, rather than lose him for free next summer.
Enquiries made by Paratici
Manager Antonio Conte and managing director Fabio Paratici are well aware of Svanberg’s abilities from their stint in Serie A and have already made enquiries regarding his future at Bologna. The player joined the Italian side in 2018 from Malmo.
Known to be a competent midfielder, he is sure to add more depth and competition to the north London club’s engine room. Having already scored three goals and picked up two assists this season, Svanberg is expected to be available for around €15m.
Tottenham’s last two imports from Italy have turned out to be smash hits for the club, with former Juventus pair Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur settling into life in England and becoming first-choice picks under Conte.
Signs, therefore, are positive about Svanberg having a similar impact at the club – quite similar to Kulusevski, who like the Bologna star, is Swedish, young, and came to the Premier League after playing in Serie A. There is hardly any reason that would convince the fans that we shouldn’t pursue Bologna’s star player.

Although there is no guarantee that Svanberg will turn out the same way as his compatriot did, the ex-Malmo star has impressed Paratici and Conte from afar while playing in Italy. Given that we may possibly be short of players next season in midfield, the Swede would prove to be an excellent addition.
His price tag is not a big concern either, and if we manage to sign him in the summer, then we could pull off a coup in the upcoming transfer window. Given that we are apparently favourites to secure his services, it will be interesting to see whether we see him in our lineup next term.
