Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur battle Arsenal for Birmingham City centre-back Nico Gordon
According to Nathan Gissing on Twitter (h/t Football.London), Tottenham Hotspur are set to rival Arsenal for the signature of Birmingham City centre-back Nico Gordon ahead of the summer transfer window. He has earned quite a name for himself, having just broken into the first-team set-up this season.
Gordon will enter the final year of his current contract at the end of the current campaign. That, coupled with his sublime performances at the back, has attracted lots of attention from elsewhere. He is considered to be one of the rising superstars, which is certainly understandable looking at how top clubs are vying for him at such a young age.
Tottenham and the Gunners would undoubtedly be facing off against each other to get their hands on the Englishman. However, they will need to deal with Manchester United and Chelsea as well if they hope to succeed in their pursuit. Other unknown clubs are also in the fray, making it even more of a challenge in the future.
Who is Nico Gordon?
The 19-year-old is a centre-back in trade, but he is also flexible enough to play as a fullback when required. That has seen him excel as a wide central defender on the left-hand side of the defensive set-up. His profile seems to be an exact match to what is required in our squad at this moment.
After all, it is claimed that Antonio Conte has prioritised the signing of a left-sided centre-back which certainly suits Gordon’s profile. However, it would be too unrealistic to expect him to play in our senior team when he has just made a breakthrough at Birmingham.
That being said, we must sign the Championship ace as he could be our long term solution in that particular position. Hence, we must add him to our academy set-up and try to ensure that he would have proper guidance to achieve the full potential he has showcased so far.
Any potential move would not be easy at all, especially when there are so many interested parties in this transfer race. Thomas Tuchel’s side, in particular, seems to be a stern challenge considering how they have already scouted the Birmingham defender in the past three matches.

Hence, Fabio Paratici and co must make an early move to put them firmly in contention to be the victors of this pursuit. A summer move could potentially be on the cards, considering how the Blues are at risk of losing Gordon on a free transfer after the next term.
There is a possibility that Birmingham could lose Gordon for free in the future if a contract extension does not take place in the coming months. Hence, they may potentially decide to part ways with him to maximise their financial boost. Only time will tell whether that is the case at all or not moving forward.
