Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur handed price tag for Benfica striker Darwin Nunez

According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano (h/t BirminghamLive), Tottenham Hotspur have received the price tag it would take for them to sign Benfica striker Darwin Nunez in the future. He has emerged to become one of the most prolific centre-forwards in world football this season.

Romano has revealed that Nunez will leave Estadio da Luz in the summer transfer window. The attacker’s new representative will now look for options for him to join at the end of this term. Manchester United, Arsenal and West Ham United have been linked with the forward alongside Tottenham.

Man United have held talks regarding a potential move within the club. The Gunners and West Ham were also interested in signing the Uruguayan back in January, but he was not in the market at that time. However, he will now be available this summer for a fee of around £66.8million in transfer fees.

Can Spurs sign Nunez?

The 22-year-old continued his fine form in the last fixture, as he scored a hat-trick to give his side a 3-1 victory over Belenenses in the Primeira Liga. That has taken his tally to 31 goals and three assists from 36 matches this campaign across all competitions.

Bringing the Uruguay international to N17 would be a great prospect indeed as he has shown qualities of being the next big thing in world football. Poaching him before other teams would not be easy in any case with the heavy demand for his services from the Premier League. That is further highlighted by Newcastle United and Aston Villa’s presence, as they are also keeping tabs on the situation.

Villa even contacted the South American’s camp to discuss the possibility of a potential move moving forward. That means we need to act fast if there are active plans to sign him to prevent getting piped by others in this transfer race. We do need a centre-forward in our ranks, considering how Harry Kane is our only option at this moment.

Nunez’s asking price is certainly reasonable, looking at the demand for his signature. Not to mention, his release clause of around £100million gives Benfica the licence to demand a fee that suits them under the current circumstances.

However, we have other areas in the squad where serious reinforcements are needed in the summer transfer window. Spending such an amount for the Primeira Liga ace would not be ideal if we cannot bolster the necessary areas like the left centre-back position, for example.

But then again, things can depend on Harry Kane’s future. Will the Englishman stay with us after a disappointing season with no silverware? It may be even more difficult to keep him if we don’t make the UEFA Champions League next season- but then it would be tougher to convince players like Nunez to join us in the first place. After all, the best players in the world would want to play in the most prestigious tournaments available.

A strike partnership cannot be ruled out too, with Conte having shown at Inter Milan that he can use that system if he has top strikers such as Lautaro Martinez and Romelu Lukaku at his disposal. While the price tag isn’t low, Nunez is young and talented- and it remains to be seen if that is enough to convince Daniel Levy and co to seriously pursue the Benfica hitman.
