Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur rival Juventus for Borussia Monchengladbach star Matthias Ginter
According to Sky Sports News (h/t The Sun), Tottenham Hotspur are ready to battle it out with Juventus to sign Borussia Monchengladbach star Matthias Ginter in the summer transfer window. He is in line to leave Borussia-Park at the end of this season, which has prompted several clubs to monitor his current situation.
Ginter has less than six months left in his current contract with Monchengladbach. That means he is legally able to reach a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs should he make up his mind to move elsewhere. The defender has already confirmed back in December that he would leave his side at the end of this term.
Tottenham and Juve would undoubtedly be facing off against each other so as not to miss out on this free transfer opportunity. They are not alone, though, with West Ham United and Aston Villa trying to finalise a move for the German international this summer as well.
Ginter to Spurs?
The 28-year-old has still been regularly utilised by Gladbach this campaign despite him revealing about the summer exit last year. He has featured 29 times for his side this term, scoring once while helping them to seven clean sheets in the process.
There is a need for a centre-back addition after this season considering how Antonio Conte’s system demands a healthy number of options in defence. After all, the three-at-the-back formation asks the North London side to provide him with enough choices to go throughout the entirety of a campaign.
That is not the case right now, as Conte only has Cristian Romeo, Eric Dier, and Ben Davies as the only reliable option for now. What’s more, Davies is not a natural central defender either, which further raises the need to bring in a defensive reinforcement this summer.
That’s not all, as the likes of Joe Rodon and Davinson Sanchez have simply not been preferred by the Italian boss so far. They would need to be moved out as such, which certainly opens up several spots that need to be filled in the summer transfer window. Even Japhet Tanganga can be deemed dispensable as he was prone to making mistakes before he had picked up the season-ending injury.

As such, Ginter would be a valuable addition to our squad in our pursuit to challenge for titles under the 52-year-old coach. Prising him away would not be easy, with three other clubs vying to get their hands on the defender.
However, we are hopeful that the Bundesliga centre-back will join us after this season since we arguably have the best project among the interested parties at this stage. But whether that will be enough to finalise a transfer or not remains to be seen.
