Erik ten Hag lines up Tottenham Hotspur star Steven Bergwijn as potential Manchester United target
According to Daily Mail Online, Erik ten Hag has identified Tottenham Hotspur star Steven Bergwijn as a potential target for Manchester United when he eventually joins them this summer. The Ajax coach has verbally reached an agreement with the English club to join them after this season.
Ten Hag is in line to take over the managerial role at Old Trafford from the next season onwards. He had tried to get Bergwijn back in January to bring the winger to Amsterdam. However, Tottenham rejected their approaches, but the Dutch coach has not let up in his pursuit. It appears that he is now contemplating signing the forward when he joins Man United.
It is claimed that Bergwijn will probably cost a fee in the region of around £20million. What’s more, he is seemingly likely to leave Spurs, having failed to garner game time since January. That has also seen unknown clubs from Germany and France turn their attention toward the attacker.
Bergwijn must stay!
The 24-year-old Dutchman’s situation is unfortunate, considering he has the quality to succeed at a club like Tottenham. His performances against Leicester City and West Ham United under Antonio Conte show what he can do if given minutes. But that has not been the case following Dejan Kulusevksi’s arrival in January.
Conte must manage Bergwijn’s minutes better so that we have a better chance at keeping him past this summer. After all, having a strong depth is very useful if we want to win silverware in the future. Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp have done a good job managing their superstars’ game time- allowing them the depth that has kept them alive in at least three competitions each this season.
Losing Bergwijn could be detrimental, especially when Bryan Gil has been sent out on loan to Valencia. If the Spaniard returns and doesn’t improve as much as Conte would like for him to become a regular for Spurs, then Bergwijn’s exit can be a problem.
We must not strengthen our direct rivals by giving them a quality addition in Bergwijn. That is unless they put in an irrefutable offer, which we could use to uplift our squad in various areas. There is, however, no clear indication if that is even remotely the case regarding this potential move.
Son Heung-Min would probably be the starter, but he cannot play every single game for us. Rotation is necessary to keep the squad fresh throughout a long season, so having Bergwijn would be crucial for us. Let’s hope that Conte can give him more minutes so that he will not push for a move this summer.

ten Hag has an idea about Bergwijn and saw him play for PSV Eindhoven when he was in charge of Ajax Amsterdam. If this move were to happen, it would be the first time a Spurs player has left N17 to directly join Man Utd since Dimitar Berbatov’s move back in 2008.
