Transfer News: Leeds United rekindle interest in Tottenham Hotspur target Josko Gvardiol
According to Football Insider (h/t LeedsLive), Leeds United have revived their interest in securing the signature of RB Leipzig starlet Josko Gvardiol, who is a transfer target for Tottenham Hotspur. He is one of the highly-rated defenders in German football at this moment and has naturally attracted attention from a host of clubs.
Gvardiol has earned quite a name for himself as a result of his performances throughout this season and has unsurprisingly garnered interest from elsewhere. Tottenham have already expressed their interest in him, and Leeds have now re-entered the race for his services which would certainly be an added hurdle in the Lilywhites’ pursuit of the defender.
The Whites were in the mix for the Croatian back in 2019, but they have now rekindled their interest ahead of the summer window. They are hoping that Jesse Marsch, who worked with the centre-back previously, could help them finalise a move after this season. Whether that will play a part or not remains to be seen.
More obstacles for Spurs
The 20-year-old is regarded as a star in the making, having earned a spot quickly in the first-team set-up. As a left-sided centre-back, he could be a perfect option for us to bring into the team, considering how Ben Davies is playing as a makeshift central defender right now.
Davies has certainly done well for us despite being played out of position, but it would be best if we have someone more suited to that role. Gvardiol would be a useful option indeed, but it won’t be the easiest job signing him.
Marsch’s side is not the only ones who are in the transfer race, with Arsenal and Newcastle United keeping tabs on the Bundesliga prospect as well. That could potentially pave the way for a transfer tussle this summer, but whether that will happen or not is something only time can tell.
Signing the Leipzig ace becomes important for us considering how our reliable centre-back options are limited. While Joe Rodon and Davinson Sanchez provide more depth to our ranks, the Spurs duo have been cast aside from regular first-team action by Antonio Conte, which means that the club should look to cash in on them.
Japhet Tanganga has also failed to cement himself as a regular centre-back under Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo, and now, Conte. The Englishman often plays down the right-hand flank. Toby Alderweireld also left us last summer, leaving a gap that Spurs perhaps tried to fill with Cristian Romero.

Gvardiol has been impressive at Leipzig and was brought in last summer around the time Ibrahima Konate departed for Liverpool. It is safe to say he has done a good job filling in for the Frenchman so far.
But whether the ex-Dinamo Zagreb sensation is ready to leave Germany after just one season at the Red Bull Arena is anyone’s guess.
