Transfer News: West Ham United consider signing Sven Botman amidst Tottenham Hotspur interest
According to The Times (Subscription Required), West Ham United are assessing their options to sign Sven Botman amidst interest from Tottenham Hotspur for a potential transfer. He is widely regarded as one of the best upcoming central defenders in French football right now after his rapid rise to the top with Lille.
Botman has become one of the leading presences of the Ligue 1 side despite his young age. That has earned him quite a lot of attention from the Premier League ahead of the summer transfer window. Tottenham have already expressed an interest to sign him, and now West Ham are considering targeting him as well.
David Moyes wants to bring a left-sided centre-back to London Stadium, which has prompted them to go down this route. Botman is not alone in their transfer shortlist as Nathan Ake of Manchester City is also being assessed. The former is targeted by Newcastle United as well, adding more competition for Spurs.
Can Spurs bring in Botman?
The Hammers are not the only ones who could use a left-sided central defender in their squad. We are also in the same boat since Ben Davies is currently playing in a makeshift role for the time being. While Davies has done well, it would be best for us to sign a natural option moving forward.
As such, Botman could be a smart choice, looking at how quickly he has developed to become a fine defender over the past year or so. It is no wonder why clubs like Moyes’ side and Newcastle are circling to get a hold of him to bolster their respective squads.
The Dutchman has played 28 matches this season, scoring thrice and assisting one goal during this period as well and has enjoyed a solid campaign so far despite injuries plaguing him this term. Last season, he helped the French club lift the Ligue 1 title, beating PSG by 1 point over the course of the season.
While our defence has considerably improved since Antonio Conte has taken over the managerial job, it is still far from the best at this moment. We also lack reliable options in our ranks, making the 22-year-old’s signing even more necessary this summer.
However, it seems that we would face more competition from our London rivals going by this update. The Magpies cannot be taken lightly either, especially when the Ligue 1 star has previously expressed his admiration for the project they are building at St. James’ Park.

So we need to be on our toes at all times if there are active plans to bring Botman to N17. Whether Fabio Paratici and co can win this transfer race or not would only be known in due time.
At 22, he still has a long career ahead of him and his prime years are yet to arrive. Standing at 1.95m tall, he is also a very imposing figure in defence- especially on attacking as well as defensive set-pieces. Adding him to the mix at Spurs would surely please the fans and if we beat our London rivals to his signature, then it would make any potential move all the more sweeter.
