Tottenham Hotspur face summer transfer battle with Manchester United for Villarreal defender Pau Torres
According to football.london, Tottenham Hotspur may have to prepare to face a summer transfer battle with rivals Manchester United for Villarreal defender Pau Torres in an attempt to strengthen their rearguard.
This campaign has seen Spurs endure some highs and lows, in what has been a truly errant and inconsistent season. The team at one point were alternating between wins and losses, unable to put together a good run of form.
Manager Antonio Conte’s arrival has changed the landscape and mood around the club, with the expectation that the Italian is the best person available to lead them to silverware and break their long-standing trophy drought.
Their last trophy was the League Cup, which they won back in 2008. Since then a few League Cup summit clashes and a Champions League final appearance offered hope, but the team were unable to get past the finish line.
Rivals lock horns for Torres
One major improvement that the side have had this term is the defence, which has looked relatively solid and compact thanks to the presence of Cristian Romero. Playing in a back three, the Argentine has impressed. To complement his system, Conte could now look to bring in another defender.
A possible option in this regard could be Torres, particularly given Spurs’ reported interest in the Villarreal star last summer. Any attempt for the Spaniard will see the club face competition from United, who like Tottenham, have revived their interest in the defender.
Torres has been in good form over the past couple of seasons, helping his side beat his rumoured suitor Manchester United in the final of the UEFA Europa League on penalties, with the Spain international managing to dispatch his spot-kick.
This term, his European dream with his boyhood club seems to continue, with the Yellow Submarines reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League after dumping Bavarian giants Bayern Munich out of the competition.

If the Lilywhites were to make an active move for Torres, we can hope that we manage to get ahead of United in our negotiations for the central defender given our recent transfer relationship with the La Liga side.
Former Spurs players like Serge Aurier and Juan Foyth now play in Spain for Villarreal, while Giovani Lo Celso was sent there on loan in January. Hopefully, we now see the Spanish team return the favour, and allow us to prise Torres away from them in the summer.
