Fabrizio Romano: Tottenham Hotspur engaged in stern battle with Leicester City for Christian Eriksen
According to the transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Tottenham Hotspur are engaged in a stern battle with Leicester City to sign Christian Eriksen after this season. He has been excellent for Brentford and Denmark since returning to football following his cardiac arrest last summer.
Eriksen joined the Bees on a short team deal back in the January transfer window, which will expire this summer. Following his impressive return to top-flight action, Tottenham have registered a keen interest in securing his services at the end of this term.
Leicester are in a similar boat as they are “really interested” in facilitating a move for the Dane as well. However, Romano has made it clear that despite the intentions, both Premier League clubs have not begun any negotiations with the attacking midfielder ahead of the next campaign.
Eriksen to return to Spurs?
The 30-year-old would face the North Londoners in a Premier League fixture tomorrow where he will be able to further impress his former side if he wants to reunite with them. Perhaps, that could also give Antonio Conte a more direct view on whether he wants to sign the midfielder or not this summer.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Oliver Skipp, Rodrigo Bentancur and Harry Winks are the four options that are available for Conte to choose from right now. While that is enough for the rest of this season, the depth is far too shallow when we will engage in more competition from the next campaign onwards.
Conte: “Christian Eriksen was really important player for me. To see him now playing at this level is incredible. I’m very happy for him, he’s doing amazing”. 🇩🇰 #THFC

Tottenham and Leicester are really interested in signing Eriksen on a free in June – but still no talks now.

Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele could return from their loan spells at the end of this term to give us more options. However, since the Spurs manager had allowed them to depart in the winter transfer window in the first place, one could say that their future at N17 has already ended despite Lo Celso excelling with Villarreal.

In such a case, having Eriksen back in our ranks would go a long way to further strengthen our midfield. What’s more, if he can perform at the current level, there is no reason to see why a return would not be a perfect match, especially when Conte is also at the helm.
After all, the 52-year-old coach did manage the Premier League ace during their time together at Inter Milan. The midfielder played a key role, especially in the latter half of the season, in helping Inter lift the Scudetto. As such, there is no reason to see why that can not be repeated this time around either. Whether the club would try to replicate that or not remains to be seen.
