Michael Carrick says he’d rather be Arsenal than Tottenham Hotspur in the top-four race
While speaking in a post-match show, as posted by the official Premier League site, former Manchester United player and manager Michael Carrick believes Arsenal are in a much more comfortable position in the top four race than Tottenham Hotspur.
Winning their away game against West Ham by a 2-1 scoreline, Arsenal have taken a 2-points lead in the Premier League table over Tottenham in the top-four race. Spurs also won their game in hand against Leicester City, but that wasn’t enough to bridge the gap.
Both North London teams will feature against each other next week, which seems to be a potential decider for the fourth place in the Premier League table. Even though both teams have played the same number of games, they won’t be in a similar position going into the North London derby.
Former Manchester United player and manager Michael Carrick believes Arsenal would have the upper hand going into the game, as they seem to be in a much more comfortable position after winning their recent fixture.
“Yeah, they’ve had a terrific run. And I always say, you know, people ask questions, would you rather be, you know, have the points in the bag, would you rather be chasing or pressing, you much rather be in a position where it’s in your own hands, 100% and that’s where they found themselves.”
Can Tottenham beat Arsenal?
Tottenham lost the first North London derby of the season by a 3-1 scoreline back in September last year. One month later, Antonio Conte took charge of the Spurs’ team, following which much has changed.
Conte brought him with his own training regime off the field, and a new set-up on it. If it wasn’t for Spurs’ recent results in the past few weeks, they were very well placed to finish fourth this season.
Tottenham were further away from the top four race when Conte took over. But under his leadership, the team made a comeback and bridged the gap. But against Arsenal, the form book goes out of the window. It will be about who wants the win more.

Spurs are equally suited to beat Arsenal in the North London derby. The Gunners might have an edge due to the points gap, but the equation can change if our team wins the game somehow. The team that is being chased can feel the pressure and slip up, and hopefully, that is the case with Arsenal.
Winning against our rivals becomes a must because we then take on an imperious Liverpool on the hunt for an unprecedented quadruple. The team Carrick has spent most of his career at, Man United, are all but guaranteed to miss out on the top four barring a miracle.
