Tottenham Hotspur forward Steven Bergwijn is open to a return to the Netherlands due to a lack of game time
While speaking in an interview with Algemeen Dagblad, as quoted by the Athletic, Steven Bergwijn revealed that he will consider his options at the end of the season amid a lack of game time at Tottenham Hotspur.
Since joining Spurs in 2020, the 24-year-old has struggled to put together a consistent run of good form. The Dutchman has featured in only 511 minutes of Premier League action this season with only four of them being starts. He started only one game in the English top-flight after Antonio Conte took charge of the team.
When asked about the possibility of becoming a first XI regular, the 24-year-old suggested that he isn’t very hopeful of it coming to fruition and will consider the solutions at his disposal.
In the January transfer window, Tottenham rejected a bid from Ajax Amsterdam for Bergwijn. It is still not known whether the Dutchman had any intentions to move away from the club at that time. But as his situation in London has failed to improve, his intentions have become sharper.
When asked about the possibility of returning to the Netherlands, the 24-year-old forward suggested that he is open to such a move. He also emphasised that the lack of game time might hurt his chances to feature for the national team. This is key given that the FIFA World Cup will be held later this year.
“It certainly would be. A return to the Netherlands would certainly be an option for me. The World Cup is coming. Mr Van Gaal, the national coach, brought me into the selection last time, even though I didn’t play much. Then you come back to the club, and you barely play. It is a shame, of course. In the summer, we really have to look for a solution”.
Will Steven Bergwijn leave Tottenham?
The Dutchman has made several impressive performances for Spurs. No doubt, the 24-year-old is full of talent and hunger. However, his qualities might not be best suited for Antonio Conte’s plans at this point.
Even though Tottenham needed a striker to step up to reduce the workload on Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, the Italian manager doesn’t put Bergwijn in the starting lineup as often as one would think.

Amid such a situation, it is highly possible that the Dutchman would put pressure on the board to let him move on. If he leaves in the summer window, then we have to search for alternatives, as his departure will only highlight the lack of depth in attack even further.
