Tottenham Hotspur dealt transfer blow as Djed Spence ready to stay at Nottingham Forest
According to TEAMtalk (h/t NottinghamshireLive), Tottenham Hotspur have received a transfer blow as Djed Spence is ready to stay at Nottingham Forest moving forward. The Middlesbrough wing-back is currently out on loan for the entirety of this season, and it seems that he wants to continue with them in the future as well.
Boro are expected to sell Spence, who is currently valued at around £15million in transfer fees. Forest are eager to make the loan move permanent, and it appears that the defender is “ready to commit” his future with them if they achieve promotion to the Premier League. This news would be concerning for Tottenham, who have expressed an interest in the youngster.
Spurs are not the only interested party in this transfer race as a host of clubs across Europe are vying for the Englishman’s services. Liverpool, Arsenal, Leeds United, Chelsea, Barcelona, Southampton, Roma, Inter Milan and Bayern Munich are the other clubs who are pursuing him at this moment.
Do Spurs still have a chance?
Steve Cooper’s side’s recent 1-0 loss to Bournemouth saw them unable to achieve automatic promotion to the England top flight. That does give us some sigh of relief, although they still can make it through the play-offs. So we must keep a close eye on that situation and see how that develops moving forward.
We would hope that the Championship side is unable to achieve promotion for our best interests. After all, that would give us a chance to case for ourselves, especially when Spence’s parent club are ready to part ways with him in the future.
The 21-year-old’s current asking price is not too expensive either, even though he is not a refined product. However, his immense potential and the high demand certainly make the valuation a considerably fair one after taking all the factors into account.
At the same time, the huge demand and the other interested parties scouting the Boro starlet should paint the picture of the stern challenge that can await Spurs in the future. The right wing-back is an area that could be bolstered, especially considering how Emerson Royal has struggled to make an impact in the attacking department.
Spence could be useful in such a case, but whether we can sign him or not remains to be seen. Fortunately, NottinghamshireLive makes a different claim that the full-back is yet to decide on his future as the final decision would only be taken at the end of the current campaign.

So, Spurs fans may not need to worry about Forest achieving promotion depending upon which of the news happens to be true. Spence, whose displays earned him a spot in the Championship team of the season, would undoubtedly be a smart addition to our squad. Whether that will happen, though, would only be known in due time.
Currently, Spurs can also play Matt Doherty down the right-hand side but the Lilywhites did sanction a move for Serge Aurier to Villarreal last summer, where he enjoyed a semi-final finish in the UEFA Champions League this year.
