Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur and Antonio Conte show interest in signing Juventus star Weston McKennie
According to the Italian news outlet Calciomercato (h/t The Sun), Tottenham Hotspur have expressed an interest in signing Juventus star Weston McKennie ahead of the summer transfer window. He has struggled to showcase the same promise he had shown in his first season at Turin this time around due to several reasons.
McKennie could be another one of those players who could be moved out as Juve are looking to rebuild their declined squad for a better future. Tottenham could take advantage as they want to get their hands on the midfielder to bolster their options.
Antonio Conte himself has “requested” the 23-year-old US international’s signing, which gives more incentive for Spurs to bring the central midfielder in moving forward. That being said, it is still early stages at this point, so it remains to be seen if a potential move is on the cards or not.
McKennie to Spurs?
Following the departures of Dele Alli, Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele, we only brought in Rodrigo Bentancur in January, which has left us short-handed in terms of the options at times. While Lo Celso and Ndombele could return from their respective loan spells, it remains to be seen if they have a future with us due to the circumstances of their exit.
Conte usually uses a two-man midfield pairing, which does give us some breathing room for now. However, injuries or suspensions could derail our season, especially when we are engaged in several different competitions. Oliver Skipp’s current setback could have adversely affected us, but fortunately, we only have the Premier League to play for at this moment.
That will not be the case next term, which means that McKennie could be a valuable addition to our squad. The Tottenham boss also already reinvigorated Dejan Kulusevski and Bentancur following their difficult spells with the Bianconeri. Hence, there is no reason to believe that the coach can do the same with the Serie A ace, especially when he has fared much better at his current club.
The Spurs manager has proven his worth at his previous clubs by bringing in success if adequately backed in the transfer windows. We must do the same to put an end to our title drought, and signing McKennie would be one of the ways to achieve that goal.
After all, Conte has apparently demanded McKennie’s signing, which means that Fabio Paratici must do his best to bring the central midfielder to N17. Whether that will happen, though, would only be known in due time.
