Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur battle Nottingham Forest for Middlesbrough star Djed Spence
According to The Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur will face off against Nottingham Forest to sign Middlesbrough star Djed Spence in the summer transfer window. The youngster is currently out on loan at City Ground, where he has impressed with flying colours prompting the Premier League side to take this decision.
Spence has made a name for himself among the Tottenham scouts, which has led to the current situation. Forest are keen to make his loan move permanent and are looking to achieve promotion to the English top-flight to help with their case. Boro could decide to part ways with him, having set a price tag for his services.
Chris Wilder’s side value the English right-back at £15million, with Spurs being set to move for him this summer. The latter’s decision is despite the Reds being in line to be promoted to England’s first division at the end of this season.
Spence to stay at Forest or join Spurs?
The 21-year-old is one of the best young talents in the Championship who looks to be on the rise to becoming a future superstar. Furthermore, he also seems ready to take the next step in his playing career, having dropped quality displays against the likes of Arsenal, Leicester City and Liverpool in the FA Cup this term.
Hence, it is understandable why Antonio Conte’s side are targeting the Boro loanee for a potential move after this campaign. That being said, we still do not know Spence’s stance on his future which leaves us in the dark regarding any possible outcomes.
As such, we need to remain wary of Steven Cooper’s side to achieve promotion as they take on Huddersfield in the play-off final at Wembley this Sunday. It would be best for the North Londoners if Forest fails to win on the day as it gives them more edge over their competition in the transfer race.
Even if Forest are the victors of the play-off final, Tottenham still have Champions League football as an incentive to make their case with the Championship starlet. Reinforcing the right wing-back position would have made sense a few months back, but things are different at this stage.

Matt Doherty has proven his worth and deserves to get a spot in the team moving forward. Emerson Royal has looked like a completely different player in the past few weeks, with his performances against the Gunners and Jurgen Klopp’s side especially standing out.
The supporters are in a dilemma at this point as one could say that Emerson’s struggles were down to the adaptation period he needed to cope with the new surroundings. In such a case, perhaps signing Spence may not be a necessity as of now. Then again, we have to see what Conte decides on this matter moving forward.
