Fabrizio Romano: Tottenham Hotspur to trigger transfer clause to sign Cristian Romero

According to the transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Tottenham Hotspur will trigger the obligation clause to sign Cristian Romero on a permanent transfer in the next few days. He has been sensational for them in the backline, particularly under Antonio Conte, making this decision quite expected for most supporters.

Romero has been so impressive that Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has named him the “signing of the season”. Tottenham had signed the defender on an initial season-long loan deal from Atalanta at the beginning of the current campaign. Despite the injuries and the team’s struggles under Nuno Espirito Santo, he has been one of their best performers this term.

Fabio Paratici played a big part in facilitating the Argentine’s transfer as the Managing Director of Football wants Romero to be a major part of Spurs’ project. The centre-back is viewed as a “key” cog of their squad by Paratici. Romano even claims that the defender has already penned a new deal, which will see him at the N17 until June 2026.

Romero, a perfect option for Conte

The 24-year-old certainly suits the style of play Antonio Conte wants to impose on his wide centre-halves in his team. Romero has slotted seamlessly into the backline under the boss, which could be down to his experience with playing in a back three system during his time in Serie A.

More importantly, Romero’s aggressiveness is something that has helped him to become a quick success under Conte so far. That’s not all, as the South American ace is able to play through the opposition and progress the ball with his technical prowess.

Romero’s rashness did see him rack up a whole lot of yellow cards in the initial period under the Italian manager. However, the Argentinian defender has overcome that issue of his and is much more composed compared to how he was in his early days under Conte’s tenure.

The decision to activate the £40million obligatory option has come at the right time as we would want a smooth transition to the next term. That being said, it was long due as well, so this update would not have been a surprise to most of the fans- if not all of them.

After all, we had included an obligatory clause to permanently sign Romero when the deal was initially agreed with the Italian side. It is also good to see that he has already penned a new contract which would see him with us for four more years.

That would secure the former Juventus man’s long-term future with us, which is a huge boost for our interests. We would hope to see a similar update with Dejan Kulusevski soon, as he is technically a loan star even now.
