Spurs Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur set to battle with a series of PL heavyweights for Ronnie Edwards
According to the Sun, a handful of Premier League teams including Tottenham Hotspur are interested in luring away talented youngster Ronnie Edwards from Championship outfit Peterborough.
Despite putting in his best efforts, Edwards couldn’t save his team from relegation. However, having given a consistent spell in 38 matches across all competitions, the 19-year-old has attracted the interest of some of the top Premier League clubs.
Crystal Palace, Tottenham and Manchester United have all shown interest in the Englishman. Now it is believed that Aston Villa and Southampton have joined the race for Edwards. It seems like a dream scenario for any teenager aspiring to be a top-level footballer.
Peterborough director of football Barry Fry has made it clear that it would take a record transfer fee to lure away their crucial asset. They are believed to be eyeing around £15m to £20m for the 19-year-old defender which would make him one of the most expensive deals in the history of Peterborough.
The club hierarchy’s demand is justifiable as there is massive interest in the upcoming starlet. Apart from Premier League outfits, RB Leipzig, Eintracht Frankfurt and Borussia Dortmund are also assessing the possibility of making an offer for the defender.
How can Edwards help Tottenham?
After the arrival of Cristian Romero, Tottenham’s defensive depth has increased, but their overall strength in the backline remains below average. Antonio Conte can still use a bit of strengthening there with a mixture of players from all age profiles.
Davinson Sánchez, Japhet Tanganga and Joe Rodon have mostly remained unused under Conte and their future in our starting XI has massive question marks over it due to this reason. Hence, the club would be wise to get in some new faces at the back.
Edwards’ incredible qualities could become a long-term solution for our defence. The Peterborough youngster is only 19 and has shown massive potential for growth. He could turn into a world-beater in the coming years.

The competition makes it challenging for our team to sign him. However, the recent injection of cash might help our board in securing a few signings that they are after. During a time when readymade world-class defenders cost a pretty penny, clubs are always on the lookout for a bargain buy who can pay dividends in the future.
Could Edwards be that player for us? We can only know if the club takes a calculated risk and gets him on board.
