Clement Lenglet ready to leave Barcelona amidst Tottenham Hotspur transfer interest
According to the Spanish news outlet Sport (h/t Daily Mail Online), Clement Lenglet is willing to leave Barcelona this summer amidst interest from Tottenham Hotspur for a potential transfer. He has largely struggled to be a regular presence at Camp Nou over the past few years, which has remained the same under Xavi Hernandez.
Barca are planning to let go of several players as they look to manage their dire finances to register incoming players. Lenglet is one among them, as he is not in Xavi’s plans moving forward. Despite the game time struggles and their stance on him, he was not open to leaving the club for some reason.
But that has changed recently as the French defender is finally ready to depart the Blaugrana side on loan. A temporary exit is being touted as interested parties like Tottenham are unlikely to take him away permanently due to the high wages in gross of around £8.5million a year.
Should Spurs risk it with Lenglet?
Spurs could use an additional centre-back in their ranks who can be a solid backup option for the upcoming campaign. After all, they only have Cristian Romero, Eric Dier and Ben Davies as the only reliable options, which is not enough in a long season.
After all, the squad depth would be tested by injuries and suspensions, which means that it is good to safeguard our interests with several options. That is especially the case considering how Antonio Conte uses a three at the back formation at N17.
Moreover, there are question marks over Davinson Sanchez, Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga’s future beyond this summer. Sanchez has done well in recent weeks following Romero’s injury, but it is unsure whether he has made enough impact to warrant a spot in the future.
Rodon has earned a few minutes recently as well, but his situation is far more complicated, having not enjoyed any significant game time for several months now. Tanganga, meanwhile, has been out of contention with a long-term injury, but mistakes have been a regular part of his game.

As such, Lenglet could have a role under Conte on a loan move, although it would be best if we could reach an agreement to reduce those wages to something reasonable. Then again, one could question whether it would be best to sign someone who has struggled over the years.
Fabio Paratici must discuss this matter with Conte at the earliest as there could be competition for the 26-year-old central defender’s signature. Other Premier League sides like Arsenal, Everton and Newcastle United have been alerted to the situation, which calls for the need for a quick decision.
