Pau Torres offers his thoughts on future transfer plans amid Tottenham Hotspur links
Speaking in an interview as quoted by Express, Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres has offered his thoughts on his future plans amid rumours of Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United interest ahead of the summer transfer window.
Torres has been one of the best defenders for the Yellow Submarines in the past couple of seasons and has naturally attracted attention due to that reason. The Spanish centre-back was subject to interest from Tottenham even last summer but a move never materialised.
The 25-year-old talent has played 47 times for Unai Emery’s side this season, scoring six goals and providing one assist across all competitions. Villareal had a great run to the Champions League semi-finals this season and Pau Torres was a very essential part of it.
Manchester United and Tottenham are said to be interested in signing the Spaniard again this season and when asked about his future Pau Torres said:
“I have the peace of mind of being where they want me, where I have a valid contract and a renewal offer.”
“The future will tell what happens but I am very calm, I do not look further and it is time to disconnect.”
Reinforcing the backline?
Antonio Conte loves to set his teams up with three central defenders and Spurs may have to reinforce their backline to remain competitive this season for that reason. Having three centre backs means the need for quality in the starting XI and on the bench in that position.
Torres could become a mainstay in the Spurs backline for years to come given his age and talent. Tottenham find themselves in the Champions League this season and they will need squad depth to compete in the competition.
Ben Davies has done a decent job when called upon in that left centre-back role for Conte but it would perhaps be smarter for the ex-Inter Milan manager to play a natural centre-back in that area.
Already a regular in the Spanish national team, Torres has won 17 caps for Luis Enrique’s side till date which shows how much talent he possesses. Although the Premier League is a different league to La Liga, Torres has shown that he can hold his own against top teams in European competitions.
