Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur target Kalidou Koulibaly wants to leave Napoli
According to Diario Sport (h/t ESPN), Tottenham Hotspur target Kalidou Koulibaly is seeking a move away from Napoli with an intent to join FC Barcelona. He has also had interest from Chelsea and Juventus.
Koulibaly has developed himself into one of the top defenders in the world in recent campaigns. The Senegalese star wasn’t able to feature regularly last term due to injury concerns and national duty, but he has produced influential performances when featured.
It is believed that Koulibaly is seeking an exit from Napoli. After playing more than 300 matches with the Italian team, the 30-year-old seems to be eyeing a new challenge and wants to be transferred in the summer transfer window rather than leaving the club for free in 2023.
Tottenham have been linked with Koulibaly and are believed to have attempted to start negotiations with Napoli along with Chelsea and Juventus. However, it is believed that the Senegalese international’s priority remains to be Barcelona.
Barcelona are aware of the situation but haven’t made any genuine approach till now. The Catalan team is believed to be targeting Sevilla’s Jules Kounde. But if they lose Clement Lenglet or Samuel Umtiti in the summer they might attempt to sign the Senegalese star.
Would Tottenham be able to sign Koulibaly?
After the arrival of Antonio Conte, Tottenham have arguably become a much more defensively stable side. With Eric Dier and Christian Romero in the back, The North London outfit has been able to showcase great defensive strength against top teams. But everything can fall in the blink of an eye as our club doesn’t have much depth in the squad.
Davinson Sánchez, Japhet Tanganga and Joe Rodon have mostly remained unused throughout the last campaign and might not have a big role in the manager’s plan for the next season. Amid such a situation, the club requires a quality cereal defender reinforcement.
It certainly speaks a lot about Conte’s trust in the trio if he has kept preferring left-back Ben Davies to play as a central defender instead of them on a regular basis.
Koulibaly has proven to be physically very strong and tactically intelligent. After playing for a long time in Italy, he has the experience needed to be a crucial defender elsewhere. Even though he hasn’t played in the Premier League, Conte’s assistance might be able to help him to adapt- granted he moves here.
