Tottenham Hotspur reject Ajax Amsterdam’s opening bid for Steven Bergwijn
According to Dutch publication De Telegraaf (h/t The Express), Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur have rejected Ajax Amsterdam’s opening transfer bid for Steven Bergwijn.
The 24-year-old joined the North London side from PSV Eindhoven in the 2020 winter transfer window. He enjoyed a brilliant start to life at the lane thanks to a match-winning debut against Manchester City. Unfortunately, Bergwijn has failed to produce such displays on a regular basis.
Tottenham appear to be ready to listen to offers for their Dutch winger this summer. Ajax unsuccessfully tried to land him in January and appear to have once more thrown their name into the hat this summer.
The Eredivisie champions’ January bid of £26.7million was turned down by Tottenham. The North Londoners have also rejected Ajax’s opening bid this summer. Whether the amount was more than what was quoted in January is debatable.
The player for his part also appears to be keen to return to his homeland this summer. With the FIFA World Cup taking place later this year in Qatar, securing regular playtime in the upcoming months will aid Bergwijn’s cause of making the Dutch squad.
The arrival of Dejan Kulusevski in January could prove to be the catalyst for Bergwijn’s departure. The Swede has been a sensational signing and has repaid the faith put in him by scoring eight goals and making five assists in just 18 Premier League clashes.
Harry Kane and Son Heung-min are two names who are ever-present in the Spurs frontline. Lucas Moura and now Kulusevski will add further depth, making the inconsistent Bergwijn’s position untenable.
Antonio Conte is ready to part ways with the 24-year-old. What price it will take Tottenham to sell up remains to be seen but given Bergwijn’s age, versatility in attack, and potential, they would be wise to get a fee that properly compensates them in a financial sense.

Bergwijn’s time at Tottenham is a question of what could have been. The Dutchman has sensational talent but all too often fails to apply it effectively. Whether he has already played his last game for Tottenham now remains to be seen.
