Fabrizio Romano clarifies Tottenham Hotspur stance on signing Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus

According to Italian outlet TuttoJuve (h/t Mirror), Tottenham Hotspur entered the race to sign Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus

It has since been claimed that Spurs offered £40million for the Brazilian striker, just £10m shy of City’s expected valuation. That is, of course, something that piqued the interest of our fanbase.

Jesus continues to be one of the Premier League’s top strikers and any team would be lucky to have the Brazilian in their squad. But it seems that Tottenham aren’t as close to signing him as some would have thought.

In conversation with Spurs fan Chris Cowlin on his YouTube channel, football transfers expert Fabrizio Romano has provided an important update.

He has rubbished claims that Spurs have already launched a bid for the 25-year-old, but clarified that the North London club has established contact with Jesus’ representatives and is indeed “interested”.

“At the moment there is no Spurs bid to Manchester City but there is contact between Jesus and Tottenham. Arsenal have been leading the race for him since a long time because of the Brazilian connection between him and director Edu Gaspar, who has been working on this deal.

“Arsenal are really interested in Jesus. But Tottenham, they are discussing with his agent.

With Harry Kane and Heung-min Son being the focal point of Spurs’ attack, the number of openings Antonio Conte’s side has in attack is limited. Especially if Dejan Kulusevski’s loan deal is made permanent, that leaves little to no room for Jesus.

Arsenal, on the contrary, can offer the Brazilian that guarantee of a regular starting berth every week, after the Gunners freed up space in their attack following the departures of Pierre Emerick Aubameyand and Alexandre Lacazette.

Spurs however have the advantage of Champions League football to swing things in their favour. Jesus has been accustomed to playing in Europe’s top competition and Europa League, for him, would be a step down.

It remains to be seen what comes of this news but for now, it would bring fans a sense of confidence that Spurs are at least on the lookout to strengthen the attack.
