Fabrizio Romano: Tottenham Hotspur to meet Middlesbrough next week for Djed Spence move
According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Tottenham Hotspur are set to meet Middlesbrough next week to hold a discussion over a potential move for Djed Spence. He had earned rave reviews for his splendid displays last season when he was on loan at Nottingham Forest.
Bringing in a right wing-back reinforcement is one of the priorities for Tottenham, alongside bolstering the centre-back position. They have identified Spence as a potential option for that reason and have been pursuing him since March. They are keen admirers of his talents and are looking to facilitate a move for him this summer.
Despite that, Romano has now confirmed that Spurs will not contact Boro this week as the former would only hold talks in the following week. It is further stated that no offer has been made so far for the U21 England international, unlike what was claimed in recent times.
Spence on the way to Spurs?
Wing-backs have always played a major role in Antonio Conte’s systems which was the case at his previous clubs as well. So it is not surprising to see why we are targeting a move for Spence when we already have Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal in our ranks.
The latter duo had underperformed for a large part of the last season, although Doherty did change this around in the second half of that campaign. Unfortunately, he ran into a major injury, but he has already proven his worth, having been our best wing-back arguably during that period.
Emerson did see a change in form towards the tail end of the season, with his performances against Liverpool and Arsenal being among his best displays for us. However, it seems like that may have come far too late looking at our attempt to prise away Spence in this summer transfer window.
Emerson’s decision-making and crossing skills were subjected to a lot of criticisms from the fans, which could ultimately be the cause of his probable exit after joining us just last summer. According to Sky Sports (h/t The Sun), he has attracted attention from Atletico Madrid and AS Roma paving the way for a plausible departure ahead of the upcoming campaign.
If Emerson is sold, then signing Spence would make sense, especially with an experienced head like Doherty being his competitor. The Championship ace would greatly match with the latter for that reason, although it remains to be seen how the meeting would turn out to be next week.

Let’s hope that Fabio Paratici and co reach an agreement as soon as possible with Neil Warnock’s side and complete a move for Spence. Then again, The Athletic (Subscription Required) revealed last week that the 21-year-old has a preference to move to N17, so we may not need to worry about possible competitors moving forward.
