Tottenham Hotspur could battle West Ham United to sign Blackburn Rovers star Ben Brereton Diaz

According to HITC (h/t Football.London), Tottenham Hotspur could battle West Ham United to sign Blackburn Rovers star Ben Brereton Diaz in this summer transfer window. He is on the back of an impressive season for his side, which has seen him linked with a move to the Premier League.

Tottenham are looking into the market for a backup option to Harry Kane and have turned their gaze toward Brereton Diaz. They have expressed their interest in securing the latter’s signature and could actively target him this summer. However, West Ham are also in the mix to sign him to improve their forward options, with Michail Antonio being 32 years of age.

Leeds United are also pursuing Brereton Diaz right now as they look to back Jesse Marsch in their attempt to uplift their squad’s quality. That being said, Blackburn did activate a one-year option in the striker’s contract extending his stay until 2023 in the process, according to BBC via Football.London.

Who is Ben Brereton Diaz?

The Chilean international is primarily a centre-forward in trade, but he is also capable of playing on both wings, particularly on the left-hand side of the attack. While Brereton Diaz is not experienced in being in the Premier League, his time with the national team could help him adapt to the raised challenge should he move to N17.

The 23-year-old has earned quite a name for himself in the Championship, having scored 22 goals and assisted thrice from 37 matches in the previous campaign. That is quite an impressive return indeed, and signing someone like him could be just what we need under the current circumstances.

The Independent state that Rovers could be willing to sell the South American this summer to prevent losing him for nothing next year. As such, he could be available for a fee of £20million, who is targeted by Sevilla as well for a potential transfer ahead of the next season.

We have quite often struggled to find the right backup option for Kane, with players like Vincent Janssen, Fernando Llorente and Carlos Vinicius failing to take that role. Perhaps, Brereton Diaz could be that man as his impressive goal-scoring tally could make him an ideal target, albeit being in England’s second division.

Furthermore, Brereton Diaz’s flexibility to play on the wings makes him an even more attractive prospect, with Steven Bergwijn wanting to leave N17 this summer. Richarlison is another option, who appears to be awfully similar to the Riversiders ace’s profile.

However, Richarlison is a lot more costly being valued at £60million, so it will be interesting to see what route Fabio Paratici and co would go down this summer. Spending big money on a backup is not ideal, so perhaps Brereton Diaz could get the nod after all.

But with the Hammers, Leeds and Julen Lopetegui’s side being in the fray, we would probably be in line for a stern transfer tussle up ahead.
