Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur lead race for Eintracht Frankfurt centre-back Evan Ndicka
According to the French outlet Foot Mercato (h/t The Express), Tottenham Hotspur are currently in the lead of the transfer race to sign Eintracht Frankfurt centre-back Evan Ndicka this summer. He was widely recognised as one of the best defenders in the Bundesliga last season alongside Nico Schlotterbeck.
Tottenham want to improve their central defensive options to back Antonio Conte in the summer transfer window. Conte is keen to strengthen his backline, with the addition of a centre-half being one of the priorities ahead of the next campaign. Now, it looks like he is edging closer to seeing his demands being fulfilled by the club.
Spurs have expressed their interest in facilitating a move for Ndicka this summer. However, they will face close competition from Marseille for his services, but the English club is in “pole position” at this instant. The Ligue 1 side has fallen behind, having seen their talks stalled with Frankfurt regarding a possible transfer.
Ndicka would be a massive signing!
There is no doubt that Conte has come in and solidified our defence, but significant upgrades are still necessary to become title challengers. Ben Davies, for example, was mostly depended upon in the previous season in the left centre-back role of the three-at-the-back formation.
Davies did a solid job, but him not being a natural central defender did cause some issues at times. Our struggles in defending set-pieces were one of the side effects of using him as a starter in the three-man backline. In such a case, signing Ndicka would greatly help us alleviate those issues moving forward.
Conte seems to be on the same page as he prefers to sign a left-sided centre-half this summer. Eric Dier and Cristian Romero have cemented their spot in the other positions making it even more understandable why that is the case. Ndicka suits the profile that the manager is searching for
The Frenchman has fared well playing in a four-man backline and a three-at-the-back system. As such, Fabio Paratici must complete a move as soon as possible so that we can quickly integrate the 22-year-old defender into the squad.
Conte would want that due to his desire to have the team ready before the pre-season. it is best to do your business early on and have a solid team in place before the campaign starts.

Ndicka may also not cost a lot with his current contract with the German club expiring at the end of the upcoming campaign. The German side would understand that they can lose the defender for free next year if he doesn’t put pen to paper on a new deal.
