Transfer News: Antonio Conte urged to sign two more players at Tottenham to compete with Manchester City and Liverpool
Former Wales striker Dean Saunders has told Talksport(h/t the Express) that Antonio Conte and Tottenham Hotspur are two signings away from competing with Manchester City and Liverpool.
Tottenham Hotspur have already made three signings this summer and have been told to make at least two more. At least that’s what Saunders thinks.
“He will be saying: ‘Let me know, Daniel Levy, if you don’t give me the funds to buy the ready mades’. Perisic is ready-made. He’s going to improve them right now. I think they are a couple of signings away from having a right go at Man City and Liverpool.”
Conte has already added winger Ivan Perisic, midfielder Yves Bissouma and goalkeeper Fraser Forster to the squad. Tottenham, meanwhile, have been linked with players such as Evan Ndicka, Ilay Zabarnyi, and Josko Gvardiol.
The Italian coach will need players both young and experienced, if he hopes to challenge City and Liverpool and hopefully win a trophy with Tottenham. Two of them are relentless and looked unchaseable last season.
Trophy drought to end?
Saunders is not technically wrong. Last season, we were tipped by many to play in the Europa League this season, but Conte’s men secured a fourth-place finish on the last day of the season ahead of arch-rivals Arsenal.
And this time, Conte will hope to avoid such a dramatic finish. A centre-back is needed and Conte would certainly plan to address this problem.
Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga are the current back-ups to the central defence and are not preferred by the Italian. If he plays Ben Davies out of position over them as central defenders, then he certainly doesn’t rate them so highly.
With Harry Kane and Son Heung-min leading the attack, and Perisic bringing his experience the front line seems to be in good hands. A midfield of Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg, Rodrigo Bentancur was already good but by adding Bissouma it can become better.
An additional centre-back would give Conte a squad good enough to challenge for a domestic cup and maybe perhaps for a European trophy.
