Transfer news: Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United could battle it out for Villarreal defender Pau Torres
According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano via GiveMeSport (h/t Express), there is now a “serious possibility” that Pau Torres could play in the Premier League. The coveted centre-half could be in the middle of a tug-of-war between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.
Romano had claimed that United had held talks with the defender’s camp, while the Sun claims that Spurs were willing to offer midfielder Giovani Lo Celso as part of a swap deal for the Spanish international.
Torres had been tipped for a move from Villarreal, following his exceptional season with the Submarines. The 25-year-old made a total of 47 appearances scoring 6 goals and assisting 1 while playing a pivotal role for Villarreal following their run to the semi-finals of the Champions League last season.
He could now be on his way from Villarreal, with the Premier League being tipped as the most likely destination for the central defender.
A marquee singing?
Both the clubs need to strengthen their defence following last season, and Torres could be a good signing for the parties involved. The defender has a release clause of £52million as per reports.
Antoni Conte is desperate to sign a defender with Cristian Romero, Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier being the only favoured defenders in the team. Japhet Tanganga and Joe Rodon are young defenders available to the Italian but are not preferred by him.
Signing such a sought-after defender would send out a message to other top Premier League teams that Tottenham mean business this season. The Spurs could potentially lift silverware this season, because of Conte being at the helm. However, the Spaniard will not come at a cheap price.
Tottenham are willing to offer Lo Celso to Villarreal, potentially bringing down the asking price. Conte seemingly does not favour the Argentina midfielder and Unai Emery likes the Argentine midfielder, who spent the second half of last season on loan at the Estadio de la Cerámica.
It remains to be seen what happens with the Spaniard. But his signing would bring a smile to the face of Spurs fans while Lo Celso’s potential loss may not hurt our first-team strength that much.

His age profile, quality, and experience of playing in Spain would make him a suitable starter for Conte in his three-at-the-back system. Hopefully, the Lilywhites get a deal across the line for him.
