Transfer news: Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has taken charge of bringing Djed Spence to Spurs

According to the Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy has personally taken on the responsibility of signing Middlesbrough right-back, Djed Spence. He has left sporting director, Fabio Paratici to concentrate on other potential signings.

Tottenham’s initial bid of £15million was rejected by Middlesbrough who want at least £20 million including add-ons for the young full-back. Spurs have been interested in the 21-year old since January, and saw two offers for him rebuffed in the closing stage of the January transfer window.

Spence, who was loaned to Nottingham Forest last season, helped the side win promotion to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs. Now, Levy wants to close the deal and make him Antonio Conte’s fourth signing of this season.

More talks are planned between the two clubs as the player himself is believed to favour a move back to London, four years after being released by Fulham’s academy.

Move in final phase?

The London outfit has been linked to the player since the start of the transfer window. Many reports linked the player with the club, but finally it seems the saga could come to an end.

Conte’s side was ruthless last season in front of goal with Harry Kane and Son Heung-min forming a formidable partnership. However, our full-backs weren’t really living up to expectations.

Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty didn’t perform very well last season, although they did manage to find some form during the last phase of the campaign. This was a problem Conte would love to address this season and Spence fits right into the bill.

Apart from all this, Spence would also add to Tottenham’s homegrown quota. The 21-year old can play as a right-back as well as a right-wing-back.

Tottenham can offer the player Champions League nights apart from competing for silverware this season. Fans would hope this is enough to convince Spence to sign for Tottenham.

Levy taking over the deal himself should be seen by the player as a sign of how serious Spurs are to secure his signature. It would then put question marks over the futures of Emerson and Doherty.

It would be an odd sight seeing Spurs house three natural right-backs in their senior side, with Japhet Tanganga also capable of deputising in that position.
