Tottenham Hotspur prepare another medical as Barcelona give Clement Lenglet permission to complete loan transfer
Barcelona centre-back Clement Lenglet has been given permission by Barcelona to complete his loan move to Tottenham Hotspur, according to Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo (h/t Express).
Spurs are preparing for another medical and it seems the French centre-back is already in London to complete his move in the coming days. If everything goes to plan, the player is expected to be presented as a new Tottenham player next week.
Antonio Conte is said to have played a key role in convincing Lenglet to opt for a move to North London. The 27-year-old has seemingly rejected other proposals to join the Italian manager’s side.
Conte’s apparent wish for a left-footed defender is close to being fulfilled. The Italian has been backed up until now by the club as the club has already made four good additions to the squad this summer.
Tottenham need to be better defensively
After starting the season on a high, Tottenham found themselves way off the pace in the league after a few weeks. Nuno Espirito Santo was eventually sacked and Conte was appointed manager.
While the results under our new boss did improve, defensive frailties were still evident. Ben Davies played the majority of the season as a makeshift centre-back on the left. And now, Conte’s demand for a naturally left-footed centre-back is about to be met.
Tottenham conceded three goals in a game six times in the Premier League last season. While our defensive record wasn’t as bad as some other teams, conceding 40 goals in the league, it was still more than the teams above us in the table.
If Spurs are to close the gap next season, our defence needs to be much more solid. The Italian manager is a master at shutting down opposition attacks. The new additions give Conte new options.
With the injury issues we had last season at the centre-back position, fans felt new additions were required. But they also hope Cristian Romero can stay fit next season. The Argentinian was a rock at the back whenever he featured.

Lenglet is another possible body in the squad Conte will have for next season. And with a long season ahead, fans hope he can come in and help the team when required.
Having played for Barca and Sevilla, Lenglet knows what it takes to play for a top team. And now, he could well be a part of a Spurs side that aims to end an embarrassingly long wait for silverware next season.
