New Spurs signing shortlisted for prestigious international award

Tottenham Hotspur star Yves Bissouma nominated for CAF Men’s Player of the Year award

Yves Bissouma, who moved to Tottenham last month, has been shortlisted among 30 nominees for the Confederation of Africa’s Football’s (CAF) Men’s Player of the Year award for 2021-22, reports football.london.

The Mali international played all four of his country’s games at the Africa Cup of Nations, where his country was knocked out in the Round of 16 by Equatorial Guinea on penalties. He recorded one assist in those four games.

Bissouma made a total of 28 appearances for Brighton & Hove Albion last season, scoring two goals and assisting two apiece, helping Brighton finish ninth in the League table.

Yves Bissouma has been nominated for CAF Men’s Player of the Year award 2021-22.

He faces rivalry from the likes of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah, Riyad Mahrez, Edouard Mendy among others. He is the only player from Tottenham to be nominated for the award.

Nomination shows his quality

His nomination for the award will come as a welcome sign among Spurs fans who will be eager to see their new midfielder perform next season. Bissouma moved to Tottenham last month in a deal worth £25 million with the potential to rise to £35 million, becoming the club’s third summer transfer window signing.

Antonio Conte had already signed Ivan Perisic and Fraser Forster before him. Bissouma is likely to partner up with Pierre Emile- Hojbjerg in the midfield, but could face competition from Rodrigo Bentancur and Oliver Skipp.

Spurs fans will hope that their new midfielder wins the award, though that is unlikely to happen. Senegal players Mane, Mendy and Kalidou Koulibaly could be said to be favourites to win as they helped their country win the Africa Cup of Nations and also beat Egypt in the World Cup play-offs to help their side qualify for the World Cup.

Apart from the Men’s player of the year award, CAF also released the lists for Young Player and Coach of the Year awards both for the men’s category. Bissouma’s native country of Mali has also been shortlisted for the National Team of the Year in the men’s category.

The winners of each category will be decided by a voting panel made up of CAF’s technical committee, media personnel, head coaches, captains of the member associations and clubs involved in the group stages of continental competitions.
