Transfer news: AS Roma show interest in signing Emerson Royal from Tottenham Hotspur
According to the Express, AS Roma have shown interest in signing Emerson Royal from Tottenham Hotspur. This comes after Spurs are said to have received an official offer from Atletico Madrid for the Brazilian.
Emerson joined Tottenham from Barcelona last summer for £25.8 million. He was brought in to compete with Matt Doherty for the right-back position. But he hasn’t really made his mark on the senior team with his performances.
The Brazilian was largely inconsistent last season. Doherty’s injury made him a regular starter, but he couldn’t perform up to the expected level. And now one year later, he could be on the move.
The 23-year-old made a total of 44 appearances in all competitions for Spurs and registered 1 goal and assist in the process. Spurs fans thought he could be the man to replace Serge Aurier, but it hasn’t looked that way, in all honesty.
Stay or leave?
It is not that he could not perform well. It was just that he couldn’t do it regularly. That is something which won’t be taken lightly at a club like Tottenham, which is why our fans would want that side to be solidified this summer.
Spurs continue to be linked with Middlesbrough right-back Djed Spence. Though inexperienced, the young Englishman can help add quality and depth to the right-back position. He would also help in adding to the home-grown quota for Spurs.
Emerson and Spence could be the future with both being just 23 and 21 respectively. They could compete against each other for years to come for the right-back spot at Tottenham- but that is if the former Barcelona man stays at this club.
Roma’s interest would be something to consider as well, given Jose Mourinho’s history with the club. However, Rick Karsdorp would like to believe he has an undisputed chokehold on that position down the right side of their defence.

Tottenham are building an exciting squad and could become the team to watch out for in a few years. If he stays, Emerson would have to give it his all and impress Conte but if the Italian manager has decided he wants an upgrade down that flank, there isn’t a lot the Brazilian defender can do then.
