Transfer News: Chris Wilder hopes that Djed Spence transfer to Tottenham Hotspur comes to a quick conclusion
Middlesbrough boss Chris Wilder, while speaking to the Northern Echo, said that he hopes that the transfer saga involving Djed Spence to Tottenham Hotspur comes to a quick conclusion.
Spence has been linked to a move to Spurs for a while now. But the two clubs are yet to reach an agreement over the fee for the 21-year-old right-back. It is claimed that Boro wants at least £20million for the talented young right-back, which Tottenham are yet to meet.
Now Wilder hopes that this saga will come to an end and he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of the player returning to the City Ground this summer. Speaking to Northern Echo he said:
“Hopefully, it will come to a quick conclusion because that would help everybody. That’s the way we’d like it to be, although the situation isn’t always straightforward. It is taking its time, but hopefully it can get sorted. If not, then as I’ve said all along, Djed comes back to us.”
The saga to end finally?
The 21-year-old was exceptionally good last season on loan at Nottingham Forest. He made a total of 42 Championship appearances, scoring 2 goals and got 5 assists, as he helped them secure promotion to the Premier League via the playoffs.
Antonio Conte has been revamping his Spurs side this summer, having already signed several players. Last season, our attack was lethal, especially towards the end of the season- but our fullbacks left a lot to be wanted with their contribution to the attack.
Spurs have signed two right-backs in two years in Matt Doherty and Emerson Royal, but their form and lack of consistent performance have left Spurs fans to wonder if they should make an upgrade down the flank. Spence, though inexperienced, could be one.
The England Under-21 international would not only help add to the depth of the squad and increase competition among players to start games but would also help in adding to the Spurs homegrown quota.
He could not only be the signing for this season but could also be the one who occupies the right-back side at Tottenham for years to come. A talented fall-back, he could use the guidance from a coach like Conte.

Also above all, he could potentially play Champions League football next season, if the move goes through. It just seems like the closing stages of this transfer deal but Wilder’s patience, given by his comments, seems to be running thin.
There is no point in Spurs haggling if it risks the deal from being completed- if that is what is holding up a deal. They have invested far too much time in pursuing the Englishman to let it fall apart at the last minute.
