Transfer News: Tottenham still hope to sign young attacker even after Richarlison capture

Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur still hope to complete the signing of Anthony Gordon from Everton

According to the Mirror (h/t Liverpool Echo), Tottenham Hotspur are still interested in signing Everton winger Anthony Gordon.

It was claimed that the club may not pursue Gordon after bringing in Richarlison. But it seems the London outfit has not yet given up hope on signing the Brazilian’s former teammate on Merseyside.

An Everton academy graduate, Gordon too played an important role last season to help the Toffees avoid relegation. The 21-year-old was a key part of Frank Lampard’s squad and has won over the Everton faithful in a short time.

A move too soon?

Antonio Conte has been very busy in the market this summer. He has already added Ivan Perisic, Yves Bissouma, Fraser Forster and Richarlison to his squad. Apart from this, Spurs are also linked with a transfer for Djed Spence and Clement Lenglet.

To add to this, Conte already has the services of Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Dejan Kulusevski. Bryan Gil has returned from his loan spell at Valencia. They are not short of attackers for next season and signing one more makes no real sense- that too a winger.

Gordon was phenomenal last season for Everton. If Spurs sign him, he will likely have limited playing time, considering the names ahead of him.

At 21 years old, sitting on the bench for most of the season could hamper his growth. Even if Conte has a plan for him, it is hard to imagine Spurs resting big names to make Gordon a regular in their first-team set-up.

If he stays at Everton, it would allow Spurs to monitor his progress better. They could see whether he can perform consistently at the highest level of the game. This would also allow him to gain more experience and improve his game.

But that, of course, runs the risk of losing him to potential suitors in the near future. If Gordon doesn’t mind being rotated regularly, this won’t be a shabby signing for the Lilywhites.

But it just doesn’t make a lot of sense, at least on paper. Could Anthony Gordon, an out-and-out winger- be used as a wing-back in the way Adama Traore was used at Wolves on occasions? No one can tell- but that would then make this potential signing a little more sensible.
