Transfer news: Tottenham Hotspur are not even considering the offer of Atletico Madrid for Emerson Royal
According to Mundo Deportivo via Sport Witness(h/t football.london), Tottenham Hotspur are not even considering the offer of Atletico Madrid for right-back Emerson Royal. The operation is said to be currently ‘stuck’.
Emerson joined Tottenham from Barcelona last summer for a fee worth £25.8 million. He was bought in as competition for Matt Doherty for the right-back position.
The Brazilian failed to make his mark in the senior team last season. Despite being a regular starter, due to Doherty’s injury, Emerson failed to perform at the expected level on a regular basis.
He made a total of 44 appearances for the club in all competitions last season, scoring 1 goal and assisting the same.
Headed out?
It is claimed that the deal is stuck because of Tottenham’s refusal to accept the deal proposed by the La Liga side. Atletico want a loan deal with an option to buy, while Tottenham would rather sell the player permanently.
Meanwhile, Spurs continue to be linked with Middlesbrough right-back Djed Spence. The 21-year-old has no prior experience in the Premier League, but that does not mean he lacks the quality for one.
He would help in adding depth to the squad and also add to the home-grown quota for Spurs. It makes sense for us to want a permanent solution to Emerson’s future. If Conte doesn’t want him, there is no point keeping the Brazilian here especially if we bring Spence on board.
A temporary spell can give him a chance to show his worth but Atletico, quite famously, aren’t really the most attacking side in the world. The Italian manager, meanwhile, likes his full-backs to attack.
So it remains to be seen if Emerson impressing at the Wanda Metropolitano would be enough to cut it at Spurs. Antonio Conte has been building a team for the present and future

Given Emerson’s experience and age, it could be a rash decision to sell him so early but if it raises cash and helps us strengthen elsewhere, it’s perhaps the right call.
He too would want regular playing time and if he can’t get it at Spurs, other options exist. Hopefully, the club sorts this out at the earliest but not at the cost of weakening our backline-we must make sure someone comes in if Emerson is going to leave.
