Tottenham Hotspur eye Memphis Depay as Steven Bergwijn closes in on exit
Memphis Depay is a player Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing this summer, according to Sport (h/t Mirror). With Steven Bergwijn close to an exit, Spurs are eyeing a replacement and the Barcelona forward is someone on Antonio Conte’s list.
Depay has just one year left on his contract after signing for the Catalans as a free agent last year on a two-year deal. Tottenham enquired about the Dutchman during their negotiations for Barcelona centre-back Clement Lenglet.
It also seems that the Blaugrana are open to the idea of selling the player since next year, the 28-year-old will be a free agent if he doesn’t sign an extension with the Spanish club.
With Champions League football back at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the allure of playing against Europe’s biggest sides is a big draw for players. Depay also has previous experience of playing in the Premier League after a disappointing two-year stint at Manchester United.
The Dutch international redeemed his name at Olympique Lyon and Barcelona snapped him up for free in 2021. But now it looks like the Spanish giants are open to a future without the 28-year-old.
How will Conte fit Depay?
The Dutchman had a brilliant start to the season, but his performances simmered in the second half, although injuries hindered his game time. Depay still ended the campaign as one of the club’s top scorers with 13 goals in all competitions, having played 37 games.
Towards the end of the season though, Xavi preferred other attacking options and the Dutch forward found himself on the bench mostly. It now feels like Barcelona deem the player expendable.
At Tottenham, Conte doesn’t want the team to lose players and not bring in reinforcements. Depay is one of the names on the Italian’s wish list. If the Dutch national were to sign, competition for every place is something the 28-year-old will find at Spurs.
