Transfer News: Barcelona star Clement Lenglet in London to complete loan move to Tottenham Hotspur
Clement Lenglet is currently in London to complete his loan move to Tottenham Hotspur from Barcelona, according to Alfredo Martinez, via the Last Word on Spurs (h/t football.london).
Personal terms have already been agreed upon with the French centre-back and all that was left was an agreement between the two clubs.
The 27-year-old has been linked with a move to the Lilywhites for a while now and it looks like Spurs are getting their man on a season-long loan from the Blaugrana. The defender has seen his stock go down at the Catalan club over the years, but a move away is now close.
Lenglet is a left-footed centre-back with tons of European experience to his name. After impressing in France, the defender was snapped up by Sevilla in the winter window of 2017. His one-and-a-half-year stint with the Andalusian side prompted Barcelona to go for him.
The French centre-back has been a vital part of the Blaugrana’s squad. The 27-year-old’s influence grew over the years. But last season, Lenglet suffered and so did the Catalans. The defender became prone to mistakes and was subsequently dropped by new manager Xavi.
After a tough season in Spain, he is seemingly now set for a new challenge in England and a loan move to the North London side could be beneficial to both parties. Lenglet needs to get his confidence back and Spurs need a defender to strengthen the squad.
Ben Davies has been deputised by Antonio Conte to play in the back three alongside Eric Dier and another fit defender. Injuries have meant that the Italian manager has had to play with a makeshift backline.
Cristian Romero has been one of the best defenders in the squad but injuries have limited the number of appearances he’s been able to make. Davinson Sanchez is another centre-back who suffered injuries during last season.
