Romano: Steven Bergwijn set to undergo Ajax medical to complete Tottenham Hotspur exit
Steven Bergwijn is in Amsterdam to undergo his medical tests and sign a contract with Ajax to complete a €30million move from Tottenham Hotspur, according to Fabrizio Romano. The Dutch forward will complete the move after speculation around his future at Spurs.
The 24-year-old is set to sign as a new Ajax player until June 2027. The figure for the deal was agreed upon yesterday and now the North London side will look to invest it in other signings.
Bergwijn’s time at Tottenham has been disappointing for both the player and the fans. The 24-year-old hasn’t really been given many opportunities to showcase his talent and a move away is a chance at getting more game time.
The World Cup starts in November and Louis Van Gaal will soon have to decide on his squad to take to Qatar.
Bergwijn goes back to the league where he shone
The winger is no slouch, having impressed at PSV before Tottenham decided to buy him in the winter of 2020. In Eindhoven, the 24-year-old came up the ranks and eventually established himself in the first team.
Having featured in 149 games for the Dutch side, Bergwijn scored 31 goals and assisted another 41. The former PSV man made a name for himself in the first tier of football in the Netherlands. Now, the 24-year-old is close to going back to Holland, where he thrived, but this time with Eredivisie champions Ajax.
In 83 appearances for the club, the Dutch national scored eight goals and provided 10 assists. Last season, the forward played just 871 minutes for the North London club.
The Amsterdam-born winger started just four league games for the Lilywhites as players like Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura were ahead in the pecking order.

While Bergwijn hasn’t played much as fans would’ve liked, he did leave us with some memorable moments. The most thrilling end to a game last season came after the 24-year-old scored two back-to-back goals after the 95th minute to secure three points for Spurs against Leicester City.
But with Richarlison and Ivan Perisic’s addition and the rise and rise of Dejan Kulusevski, things didn’t really look like they could get better for Bergwin at North London. In that case, it makes sense for both parties to go their separate ways.
