Tottenham Hotspur and Middlesbrough agree potential £20 million fee for Djed Spence
Tottenham Hotspur have agreed to a fee with Middlesbrough that could potentially see the North London side pay £20 million for the transfer of Djed Spence, according to The Telegraph. The initial fee is said to be around £15 million, with instalments taking it even further.
The signing of the full-back is expected to be secured by the weekend as the 21-year-old is on top of Antonio Conte’s wishlist. Spence is said to have his medical scheduled before the Spurs squad travel to South Korea for their preseason tour.
Tottenham have been looking at getting the full-back after an impressive season with Nottingham Forest in the Championship. The 21-year-old helped the Tricky Trees get promoted to the Premier League after winning the promotion playoffs.
Spence had a brilliant season with Forest. But the player was on loan from Boro and returned to Chris Wilder’s side amidst interest from the Lilywhites. The North Yorkshire side are holding out for a significant sum and it seems like Tottenham are willing to splash the cash on the young full-back.
If Spence signs, he’ll be coming into a team that already has a couple of contenders at the right wing-back spot. Emerson Royal was signed by Spurs just a year back from Barcelona. The offensive right-back has had a mixed season in North London, starting off poorly but ending the season on a high.
The Brazilian played the majority of the games for Tottenham last campaign, starting 25 games in the Premier League. Mainly playing a bit higher up the pitch with Spurs playing in a back three, the full-back showed his qualities under Conte by the end of the season, helping the side to a top-four finish.
Matt Doherty is the other option at Conte’s disposal. The Irish national joined in the summer of 2020 under Jose Mourinho, but the opportunity of playing for a side like Tottenham seems to have gotten to him and the 30-year-old has lost the shine he had at Wolves. Doherty barely had a run in the team until the second half of the season and an injury curtailed further involvement.
Spence’s signing signifies a change in the Italian’s game plan. The 21-year-old’s possible signing also gives the Lilywhite an increase in the number of homegrown players in the squad.

It remains to be seen what Conte decides about the roles of the three options he’ll probably have on the right next season. But fans will feel spending so much energy and money on Spence doesn’t bode well for the futures of our other two options.
