Newcastle United are interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur defender Japhet Tanganga
According to Tutto Mercato (h/t Chronicle Live), Newcastle United are ready to snap up Tottenham Hotspur defender Japhet Tanganga this summer0. Italian champions AC Milan are the other club interested in the 23-year-old.
The Magpies are willing to take the player on loan initially from North London and then buy him for around £20 million. Although, there’s no mention whether it’ll be an option or an obligation on their part to do so.
Tanganga has been at the club since he was ten years old and has come up the youth ranks at Tottenham. Since making his senior debut in 2019, the 23-year-old has slowly grown in stature at the club.
With 43 first-team appearances to his name, Tanganga is an experienced player who’s been in and around the squad for a while now. Last season saw the Hackney-born defender feature the most in his yet infant senior career.
Antonio Conte’s arrival saw Tanganga being given ample opportunities. The 23-year-old started most of the games as the Italian took charge. But a knee injury sidelined him from February onwards.
It has to be noted that a big chunk of his appearances came at a time when other players in our squad were out injured. Cristian Romero had an injury-hit season. Tanganga also featured a lot on the right full-back position.
It’s uncertain what role the 23-year-old would’ve played if he had stayed fit till the end of the season. Davinson Sanchez filled in for Romero, but the Argentinian showed a difference in quality whenever he featured in the previous campaign.
Eric Dier was solid as a rock for most of the season. Playing in the centre of a back three, he was the leader and organiser of our defence. Ben Davies was the other option preferred by Conte.

While Tanganga isn’t one of the main defenders in the squad, the academy product is still a decent player. Tottenham go into a long season and fans will hope the homegrown talent stays to prove his mettle. After all, we can never have enough strength in depth.
