Tottenham Hotspur enter race to sign Sevilla defender Jules Kounde as Chelsea back off
Tottenham Hotspur have entered the race to sign 23-year-old defender Jules Kounde from Sevilla this summer, according to the Mirror. Paris-Saint Germain are also interested in securing the Frenchman’s signature.
Kounde has a release clause of £76 million in a contract that ends in 2024. The Andalusians have been in talks with Chelsea as well but it seems their interest has cooled off for now, with the Blues pursuing Kalidou Koulibaly.
The North London side is still in the mix for the 23-year-old. Antonio Conte missed out on Alessandro Bastoni from Inter Milan. So the Italian has decided to stay in the race for the Frenchman.
Kounde joined Sevilla from Bordeaux in 2019 and has established himself as one of the best defenders in La Liga over the years. Featuring 133 times for the Sevillistas Rojiblancos, the 23-year-old has also made it to Didier Deschamps’ plans.
The versatile defender has featured in every position across the backline with Sevilla and France. Spurs fans will feel Kounde is a perfect fit for Conte’s plans.
We have gone out and spent a lot of money this summer on new recruits. In defence, Clement Lenglet arrived from Barcelona on loan. There are also talks of Djed Spence being bought from Middlesbrough.
The summer is long. The club is still in the market for more signings to arrive by the end of the transfer window. The team is building a solid squad for next season. It remains to be seen what the hierarchy decides to do next.
Last season, Conte was devoid of options at the back, with injuries being a constant issue. Cristian Romero, Davinson Sanchez and Japhet Tanganga were all out for some periods of the campaign.
