Antonio Conte feels playing Tottenham Hotspur forward Lucas Moura in a wing-back position is ‘a good option’

Lucas Moura started as a wing-back for Tottenham Hotspur in their draw against Sevilla in the final game of the pre-season in South Korea. Antonio Conte feels it’s “a good option”.

The Brazilian joined Spurs in 2018 from Paris Saint-Germain and has played in multiple positions in the forward line. The 29-year-old is a versatile option for the Italian manager.

But playing Moura at wing-back is something spectators haven’t seen before. Speaking after the friendly match, via the Evening Standard, Conte said that he has had a conversation about it with the Brazilian.

Tottenham Hotspur star Lucas Moura expresses disbelief at being omitted for the UEFA Champions League final against Liverpool
Antonio Conte sees Lucas Moura as a wing-back option.

“I spoke with Lucas and I think that this will be a good option for me.”

Moura has played 201 games for Tottenham. The 29-year-old has been a key member of the squad in recent years, although he hasn’t been able to make his mark on the team yet.

Playing in the forward position, the Brazilian has contributed with 38 goals and 27 assists. His pace and agility are significant assets for him. But fans feel the 29-year-old’s numbers could be better up front.

Conte has converted many wingers into wing-backs in his managerial career. Ivan Perisic and Victor Moses are the two most recent examples. And Conte feels Mora has the quality to play well in the position.

Perisic found success playing as a wing-back under Conte.

“In the past I converted Perisic in that position. [Victor] Moses was the same. [Antonio] Candreva was the same. Before a winger and then to become a wing-back. For sure he has great quality Lucas and I think this could be a good option.”

The Italian doesn’t just change positions for the sake of it and knows what he’s doing. Conte is able to convert players into quality wing-backs who can help the team in an effective manner.

With Perisic and Moses as his wing-backs in Inter Milan and Chelsea, respectively, Conte won the league titles. So fans shouldn’t worry too much about seeing Moura in an unorthodox position with competition in the attacking positions high.

But with Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty already at the club and the imminent arrival of Djed Spence, Conte already has three possible options for the right-wing-back position. It remains to be seen how much trust the Italian puts in the Brazilian next season.
