Tottenham Hotspur look to hijack Jordan Veretout deal as Marseille eye AS Roma star
Tottenham Hotspur are apparently linked with a move for AS Roma star Jordan Veretout. French outlet L’Equipe (/t Football.London) claim that Spurs could look to hijack a deal for a fee of around £13million.
Olympique de Marseille are pursuing a deal but the Lilywhites’ name has now been thrown into the hat for the French midfielder. Antonio Conte’s side are also linked with a move for Veretout’s teammate Nicolo Zaniolo.
The 29-year-old is a smart option to consider for Conte. He may not have had a blast in England during his two years on Aston Villa’s books, but he still managed to play in 25 Premier League games, assisting five goals.
Veretout signed for I Giallorossi just two years back after enjoying a loan spell at the Stadio Olimpico from Fiorentina before that. He is a crucial part of Jose Mourinho’s set-up, with the Portuguese manager aiming to build something special in Rome.
What should Spurs do?
The Serie A side have already captured Paulo Dybala this summer on a free transfer and it remains to be seen if they let either or both of their stars leave. Spurs could, in all honesty, do without both players.
There isn’t any urgent need for a right-winger or a central midfielder. Rodrigo Bentancur, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and Yves Bissouma will vie for playing time in Conte’s midfield two.
Elsewhere, Spurs have no dearth of options on the flank either. However, the Italian playmaker’s ability to play as a central attacking midfielder could be of use to Conte.
