Why Christian Eriksen chose Manchester United over Tottenham Hotspur return

Christian Eriksen had a memorable six and half-year spell at Tottenham Hotspur under Andres Villas-Boas, Tim Sherwood, and Mauricio Pochettino before he made the move to Inter Milan.

He had a mixed time in Italy but things went awry for him last summer when he suffered a cardiac attack in Denmark’s UEFA Euros group game. He subsequently left I Nerazzurri later that year and joined Brentford for the remainder of the 2021/22 season.

Eriksen becoming a free agent this summer was big news. He was a 30-year-old playmaker who had ample experience in Holland, England, Italy, and on the international stage with Denmark.

Of course, teams were going to flock around him for a potential move. Manchester United and Spurs were two of the biggest names chasing him, but the former Ajax man ended up at Old Trafford.

Not meant to be

Reliable journalist David Ornstein appeared on The Athletic’s YouTube channel (h/t the Express) and gave an explanation as to why a potential return to the Lilywhites fell through for the Dane.

According to him, Spurs contacted Eriksen about a potential return. The club had seen a number 10 in Dele Alli leave for Everton earlier this year, while Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele have clearly been out of favour under the Italian manager.

In that regard, it made sense. But apparently, Eriksen’s contract demands – the length and the financial aspects of it – did not sit right with Tottenham. A move to Old Trafford followed, where he signed a three-year-long contract.

Spurs fans would, of course, wish Eriksen the best in endeavours – on the condition that he doesn’t conjure up his magic when he takes the field against our side.
