Federico Bernardeschi reveals offer from London club amidst Tottenham links

Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, via The Boot Room (h/t Football. London), former Juventus star Federico Bernardeschi who joined Toronto FC admits that there was an offer from a London club amidst links to Tottenham.

The Italian forward went on to admit that he admires Spurs boss Antonio Conte, going on to fuel the rumours that the London club he was talking about could have indeed been Tottenham.

Bernardeschi joined Juventus from Fiorentina in 2017 and he had a fairly successful five-year stint at Turin. Injuries prevented him from playing more games but he impressed whenever fit for the Old lady.

At just 28, it is a little surprising that he decided to make the switch to MLS so soon at an age when players generally are considered to be entering their prime. Bernardeschi could have definitely done a job at a European club.

However, the player feels that he has nothing left to prove and claims that he is extremely happy with the move to Toronto FC

“I won nine trophies playing for Juve. What more could I ask for? I have nothing to prove. Yes, [I also had an offer] from London. But I don’t say who. Let’s say that I admire Conte shamelessly.”

Bernardeschi might not admit it blatantly but his words seem to point very clearly that the London club in question that made an offer for him was none other than Tottenham Hotspur, who are managed by Conte.

The 28-year-old, if he had indeed come here would have been a decent addition to our squad. He is coming off a season where he played 36 games for Juve scoring two goals and providing six assists across all competitions.

Conte might have been planning to use Bernardeschi as a wing-back in a similar manner to how he uses Ivan Perisic who he signed from Inter and Lucas Moura who he is grooming to play in that role.

For a player of Bernardeschi’s quality, it seems too soon for him to move to American football but he has made that decision. He would have been a great addition to us but it is not to be. It is not likely to hurt us though as we have signed other options.
